It is now a good few months since any of us collectively engaged with the challenge of Racial Justice.
- The Church Council used an audit tool produced by the ACK to help us discern areas where we must do better.
- Discussions were engaged in by a number of us (on zoom of course) including looking at books the main one that did the rounds being: “CASTE – the lies that divide us” by Isabel Wilkerson – particularly brilliant in our context as an international church as it addressed the topic from American, German and Indian perspectives.
- More recently Arbeitskreis Asyl Stuttgart produced in its monthly resource paper the following (incl. in English and German) :
Eurocentric – a closer look at terminology
Unter Eurozentrismus versteht man die Betrachtung und Einschätzung inner- und außereuropäischer Gesellschaften aus herkommlicher europäischer Perspektive und gemäß den von Europäern entwickelten Werten und Normen. Diese Wertvorstellungen, Kategorienbildungen und Überseugungen bilden im Eurozentrismus den Mittelpunkt des Denkens und Handelns.
Eurocentrism is the view and assessment of societies within and outside of Europe from a traditional European perspective and in accordance with the values and norms developed by Europeans. These values, category formations and overconfidence form the focus of thinking and acting in Eurocentrism.
Doch umfasst der Begriff Eurozentrismus nicht nur das geografische Europa, sondern auch alle ‘neoeuropäischen’ industrialisierten Staaten der sogenanten westlichen Welt in Nordamerika, Südafrika, und Australien. Eurozentrisches Denken ist seit der Kolonialzeit vielfach die treibended Kraft für den wirtschaftlichen, socialen und kulturellen Wandel in den moisten Gesellschaften der Welt.
However, the term Eurocentrism encompasses not only geographical Europe, but also all the ‘neo-European’ industrialized states of the so-called western world in North America, South Africa, and Australia. Eurocentric thinking has been the driving force behind economic, social and cultural change in most societies around the world since colonial times.
