A Prayer for Peace
Almighty God,
from whom all thoughts of truth and peace proceed:
kindle, we pray, in the hearts of all, the true love of peace
and guide with your pure and peaceable wisdom
those who take counsel for the nations of the earth
that in tranquillity your kingdom may go forward,
till the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Remembrance Sunday 2024
Today is the Sunday when Britain and many Commonwealth countries, since the end of the First World War, remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty. The charity, the Royal British Legion, organizes the Poppy Appeal in order that they may continue to help serving and ex-Service people and their families and dependents who are in need. The red poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem „In Flanders fields“. Poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders and their brilliant red colour became a symbol for the blood spilled in the war.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
Tragically, World War 1 was not the so-called „War to end all wars“. Since then, and to this day, there have been, and continue to be, many wars, in many parts of the world.
At St. Catherine’s we have people in the congregation from many different countries, all of which have suffered from terrible effects of war. It seems good, therefore, to broaden the poppy message to make it also a prayer of peace.
I will be selling poppies next Sunday, 10th November and we ask you to give generously to this charity so that they can continue their valuable work.
