Ascension Day

Welcome to Ascension Day

The Liturgy for this day begins with:

God has gone up with a shout ,
the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.   Psalm 47.5

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, for forty days we have been celebrating with joyful hearts the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, his bursting from the tomb and his defeat of the power of sin and death. He appeared to his disciples many times and told them about the kingdom of God.
Today we recall how he left this earth and returned to his Father, ascending into heaven to take his throne over all dominions and powers. Trusting in his reign over all creation, and submitting to his kingly yet loving rule, let us hear the story of his parting.

Acts of the Apostles 1.4-11

Alleluia. Christ is risen.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Ascension Day Walks

While most churches no longer offer a formal service on this day, many of them transfer such a service to the Sunday that follows and we do so here at St Catherine’s.

What is also a wonderful mix of the spiritual and the social is to offer church an Ascension Day walk –

starting with a gathering prayer
then follows a reflective / silent walk which ideally ends on a hill
there the Acts narrative is read
prayers are offered for all that can be seen from up that hill
and the people depart (often in search of refreshment)

St Catherine’s in Covid

Offers you a small selection of walks and a bike ride you can make on your own or as a family while praying that next year we can gather as a large group…..
