Memories of a past Coronation

This week we hear from our other Church Warden, Alison, and her memories of the Coronation of Elizabeth II, June 1953

All the planning for the Coronation of King Charles III brought back memories of his mother’s Coronation in June 1953. I was 7 years old, my elder sister 11 and my younger sister 5. On the day, together with my family, I watched the Coronation at my grandmother’s on her small, black and white television.
One of the events planned at the Coronation Village Fete was a decorated bicycle
competition. We intertwined strips of coloured crepe paper through the spokes of our bicycles: red to match my younger sister’s tricycle, white round the wheels of my elder sister’s bike and blue for my smaller bike. We also wore sunhats decorated with crepe paper. Having paraded with our bikes and tricycle we were awarded the first prize a rectangular biscuit tin , pale blue and decorated with a photo of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh on the top. Over the years it became very well used and accompanied me throughout my childhood as a memento of a very special day.

Make your own Memories of the Coronation in May 2023.

From 14:30-16:45 we will be offering afternoon teas at the Anglican Centre. A perfect chance to sit down with friends, celebrate English cake and discuss the previous days events (the coronation or the soccer)

At 17:00 there will be a Songs of Praise service in St. Catherine’s with music from our scratch choir, hymns to join in singing and prayers for the King

Following the service everyone is invited to spill out into the sunshine (we live in hope) to raise a glass of Pimms or non-alcoholic Punch

So put the date in your diaries, invite your friends to the bits they will enjoy, come and join the celebrations.

If you are planning on baking for the cafe please mail  coronationcafe@stcatherines-stuttgart.de with what and when you would like to deliver it.

(“Keeping cakes” could be dropped off conveniently Friday between  17:00-19:00 when the Chaplain is about)

Please share the flier below. If you would like ones for the separate events please e-mail communications@stcatherines-stuttgart.de
