Chaplain’s Musings – 19th July 2021

Sign-up-form for this Sunday’s Outdoor Church

Musings:

“The road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began
now far ahead the road has gone and I must follow if I can
pursuing it with weary feet until it joins some larger way
where many paths and errands meet and whither then ? I cannot say.”
                                                                                  J.R.R.Tolkein

In keeping with the Classics Theme of the last two weeks ….
The twin themes of Road/Way and Journey are central to the Christian faith and the Christian life and the Christian disciplines. Pilgrimage journey, Vocational journey, Liturgical journey, Discipleship journey…
At this precise point in history we are on a new journey and it can feel like the one most taken in the fog of unknowing !

Our journey as a church and faith community back into church-based life.

This has been a key task for the leadership team of the chaplaincy.
Where we would like to get to is –

  • Provision to be on offer which allows individuals and households to make their own decisions about what feels safe, about what the pressures and demands are, what best meets spiritual needs over time. To that end there will be more than the choice of the past: “shall we go to church today / not ?”

What the commitment of the leadership team is –

  • Provision of resources and live events / services
  • Risk Assessments especially around the frequently changing Covid situation
  • Enabling and encouraging people to resume church-going habits
  • Enabling our young people to have things to engage with on their own spiritual journey (which means there are some responsibilities of parents and godparents here that did not exist pre Covid)

Terminology:

  • ‘live’ means in Church or in the Anglican Centre or in some other venue
  • ‘digital’ means mostly Zoom
  • ‘hybrid’ means a live event where there will be a laptop in the room and a zoom code so people can join that live event over zoom (for whatever reasons)
